Step 1. Update the system

sudo apt-get update

Step 2. Install the package

sudo apt install i3

Step 3. Reboot the machine

Step 4. On the login screen click on the icon right from your username. Select I3 Window Manager and return back to the login screen, click the little icon next to the password box. It’ll show you the desktop options. Select i3 and log in

Step 5. i3wm doesn’t have a lot of default configuration because it assumes that you want to customize it

Step 6. On your first run, you’re going to see a window asking you to create a configuration file. Accept. Then you’ll get another asking which key you want to use as the “Mod” key. It can either be the “Windows” key or “Alt.”
